“Much of our lives as sisters and brothers is played out in the gap between myth of what siblings are supposed to be and the often painful reality of what they are, between your ideal sibling and your real ones, between the myth and the reality. ”
Our relations with our brothers and sisters continue to fascinate and disappoint us. In a profound sense, we all know what a sister or brother is supposed to be. The archetype is so accessible. Even solo children know what a real sister is, or how a true brother should act. Join us with Henry Abromovitch to explore the Brother-Sister Archetype.
This myth of sisters and brothers is true and profound. But the reality of sibling life can be very different. The dynamics of envy, conflict, alienation, and worse can complicate and corrupt the ideal sibling bond. Henry Abramovitch, our distinguished guest lecturer and author of Brothers and Sisters: Myth and Reality, explores the tensions within these dynamics in a variety of cultures, texts, and clinical examples. The book examines what is at the core of brother-sister dynamics and discusses it from mythological, Jungian, and clinical perspectives toward repair.
In this presentation, Dr. Abromovitch will present a new vocabulary and way of conceptualizing sibling dynamics. Dr. Abromovitch will also demonstrate why sibling and sibling-like relationships are crucial for the process of individuation. Abramovitch looks at the developmental sequence within the relationship as siblings struggle to establish their roles in relation to one another, concluding with a personal account of his relationships with his brother and sister.
