A collaborative reading exploration of fairy tales
Experience the power of collective reading by embarking on a transformative journey into Carl Jung's theories on fairy tales. Mind Body Passport's Reading Room series utilizes a dynamic online format to unlock the depths of Jung's work and ideas in a way you've never experienced before.
Carl Jung believed that myths and fairy tales provided the clearest picture of the inner workings of the collective unconscious. Jung focused much of his writing on myths and the archetypal images contained within these stories. However, he also recognized the extreme importance of fairy tales as a portal into the collective unconscious. Jung’s protégé, Marie-Louise von Franz, dedicated her life to working with fairy tales from around the world. Learning to read a fairy tale through an archetypal lens allows us to expand our work with clients in exciting ways.
Marie-Louise von Franz (1915-1998) was one of Jung’s closest colleagues who explored the varied manifestations of the psyche. von Franz was an electrifying lecturer and many of these lectures were later transcribed into well-known books on Jungian psychology. Her interests included dream interpretation, alchemy, and fairy tales. In this class we will carefully work through an essay discussing von Franz’s approach to fairy tales and their interpretation with emphasis on the differences between archetypes and instincts.
Collectively, we will analyze key passages by reading sections aloud each week, fostering a deeper connection with the material and promoting a richer understanding of Jung's theories. This interactive format fosters a vibrant learning community where everyone contributes to the exploration of Jung's ideas. With expert guidance, you will benefit from the insights of experienced facilitators to explore a diversity of interpretations, share your insights, and learn from fellow peers within a supportive environment.
What we’ll be reading:
We will read The Bremen Town Musicians from the point of view of Depth Psychology which begins by exploring how humans deeply connect to each other through storytelling. von Franz then describes Jung’s views of archetypal motifs, the collective unconscious, and the structure of fairy tales. The Grimm’s fairy tale The Bremen Town Musicians describes the journey of four animals and their defense against hostile thieves. von Franz explores the relations between our animal nature and rationality and how the four animals relate to the four typological functions. von Franz amplifies the psychological meaning of each animal in the story. The essence of the essay is how the fairy tale relates to the issue of evil in our lives.
No matter your background, Jung's Reading Room welcomes you to explore the captivating world of Jungian psychology in a supportive and engaging online environment. Prepare to embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery!
